Preserving Life on Earth: 36 Years of Global Cooperation with the Montreal Protocol
The 16th September is World Ozone Day. As we commemorate the remarkable commitments made in 1987 to protect human life and the environment through the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This World Ozone Day is focusing on the theme of “Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change while highlighting our responsibility to build upon the significant progress we have already achieved.
The ozone layer, a delicate shield of gas surrounding our planet, plays a crucial role in protecting Earth from the harmful rays of the sun. It safeguards life as we know it. That is why 36 years ago, on World Ozone Day , the Montreal Protocol was established to combat the depletion of this essential layer.
Once the world discovered that ozone-depleting substances released through aerosols and refrigerant from cooling systems were creating a hole in the sky, an urgent call for action was made. The global community came together, embracing the power of multilateralism and effective global cooperation. By phasing out these harmful substances, they not only saved humanity from one of the greatest threats we have ever faced but also paved the way for the healing of the ozone layer. Once again, it shields us from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation.
Building services play a crucial role in addressing the issue of refrigerant leakage, which has historically contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer. As leaders in the industry, it is our responsibility to act and reverse these changes. So, what steps can companies and organizations within our sector take to repair and restore the ozone layer, while also reducing the impact of climate change?
By phasing out ozone-depleting substances (HCFC’s) and actively pursuing the objectives set forth in the Kigali Amendment to phase down HFC production and consumption, we can make extraordinary progress in our mission. World Ozone Day offers an ideal platform to showcase and raise support for our national compliance strategies among the public and key stakeholders.
