Making Strides Towards Sustainable Development Goals: Interim update from WAVE
30th June 2023
At WAVE, we understand the pressing need to adopt a greener lifestyle in the face of climate change and social challenges. As we continue to push ourselves towards sustainable development goals (SDGs), we’re excited to share some of our recent highlights and contributions to a better world.
Supporting Retailers’ Green Transition:
One of our proudest achievements has been assisting ALDI with their integrated heating strategy. Through integrating refrigeration and heating systems, ALDI has been able to achieve a remarkable reduction in environmental impact and overall system efficiency. This accomplishment was recognized with a prestigious industry award in 2022. We’re thrilled to have helped ALDI on their journey towards a greener future.
Mission Christmas: Sharing Joy and Hope:
During the festive season, we didn’t forget about those less fortunate. In collaboration with Cash for Kids, we supported the packing over 1,000 toys for disadvantaged children. In addition, our monetary donation of £500 directly supported Cash for Kids in purchasing more presents. Furthermore, at a separate event, we organized a collection for this noble cause during a Leeds United open training session. It truly was a meaningful contribution, especially during a challenging Christmas period. You can read more about this here and here.
The Big Sleepout: A Night for a Cause:
Our very own Engineering Manager, Sam Cameron, dedicated a night of comfort to raise money for the Happy Days homeless charity. Sleeping outside from 8pm Friday to 7am Saturday, Sam managed to raise £227 from sponsors. But it’s worth noting that collectively, all participants raised a staggering total of £27,403! This tremendous effort demonstrates our commitment to addressing social issues head-on. You can read more about this here.
Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge:
A team of WAVE members, including Alan Saban, Sam Cameron, Yousaf Mohammed, and Caitlin Earle, embarked on an extraordinary adventure to raise funds for the Happy Days homeless charity. They conquered the formidable Yorkshire 3 Peaks, enduring a 24-mile circular route with 5000ft of vertical ascent. With sheer determination, all five team members completed the challenge, raising over £600 through various sponsorships so far. Well done to the team for their unwavering spirit and determination! You can read more about this here.
World Refrigeration Day: Cooling Innovations and a Fun Experiment:
In celebration of World Refrigeration Day, we put our engineering minds to work. We insulated 0.5kg of ice using only items found in our kitchens, aiming to preserve it throughout the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge. Alan emerged as the champion, preserving a whopping 320g of ice, closely followed by Sam with 280g, and Yousaf with 194g. Though Cat couldn’t retain any ice, her effort was truly commendable! This experiment highlighted the importance of proper insulation and efficient manufacturing, reinforcing the significance of refrigeration in our lives. You can read more about this here.
What’s Next on the Horizon:
WAVE continues to embrace the spirit of giving back. Our next initiatives include volunteering for a river survey with the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and fundraising at the VW Festival, supporting Cash for Kids once again. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting projects! Follow our LinkedIn page to get the latest news on these developments.
In striving for sustainable development goals, WAVE stands strong in its commitment to a greener future. Together, let’s tackle climate change, support social causes, and make a positive impact on society. Join us in this vital journey!
